Your Vanilla Prepaid Mastercard card will be activated by the cashier at the time of purchase. Until activated, the card has no value. We recommend that you sign the back of the card where indicated and write down the card number and the customer service number in case the card is lost or stolen.
In some rare instances, funds can take up to 24 hours to be available on the card. However, you can typically start using your card 60 minutes after the card is activated at the store.
You can check your card balance online for free at www.vanillaprepaid.com or by calling customer service (Mastercard: 1-800-652-9174, Visa: 1-844-864-6951). You should know your card balance before you shop, as merchants cannot determine the balance on your card. If you try to purchase an item of greater value than your card balance, your card will be declined.
As per Mastercard and Visa requirements, all prepaid cards have expiry dates printed on them. Although your Vanilla Prepaid Mastercard and Visa card will have an expiry date, your funds do not expire. If your card is about to expire, don’t worry — your funds do not expire! Simply contact customer service (Mastercard: 1-800-652-9174, Visa: 1-844-864-6951) and they will replace your card with a new card with an extended expiry date.
You should use your mailing address. This will ensure that if a problem arises you are able to be contacted by the merchant. If you are using the card for online transactions, we recommend that you register your postal code at www.vanillaprepaid.com, as a number of merchants use this as a security check before processing online orders.
Some merchants (including, but not limited to, restaurants, hotels, or car rental companies) may pre-authorize the transaction amount for the purchase amount plus up to 20% (or more) above the purchase amount to ensure there are sufficient funds available on your card to cover any tips or incidental expenses. In such cases, your transaction will be declined if the card balance will not cover the transaction amount plus the pre-authorized amount.
A pre-authorization will place a “hold” on an amount of your available card funds until the merchant sends us the final payment amount of your purchase. Once the final payment amount is received, the pre-authorization amount on hold in excess of that final payment amount will be released. It may take up to seven days for the pre-authorization hold to be removed. During the hold period, you will not have access to the pre-authorized amount.
If there is any dispute in regard to purchases you make using the Vanilla Prepaid Mastercard or Visa card, you should settle such disputes with the merchant from whom the purchase was made. You should ask the merchant for any return policy that may apply to purchases made with the card. If you are entitled to a refund for any reason for goods or services obtained with the card, credits will be applied to the balance on your card. Refund transactions cannot exceed the original value of the purchase transaction. See Cardholder Agreements for more details at www.vanillaprepaid.com.
If you believe that your card has been lost or stolen, please contact Vanilla Prepaid Mastercard or Visa card customer service immediately (Mastercard: 1-800-652-9174, Visa: 1-844-864-6951).
You will be asked to provide customer service with the card number and other identifying details. Customer service cannot provide a replacement card if you do not have your card number. If their records show that a balance still remains on the card, they may cancel the card and refund such available balance amounts to you in the form of another prepaid card.
